The maritime industry is digitizing at a pace that is rewriting job descriptions across every function — from crewing to chartering, from port operations to vessel maintenance. Here's what digital skills are now expected, what's emerging, and how to build them.

Why Digital Literacy Is Now a Core Competency

Five years ago, digital skills in maritime were a differentiator. Today, they're a baseline expectation. This doesn't mean you need to be a software engineer — but you do need to be fluent in the digital tools of your function.

Function-by-Function Digital Expectations

Ship Management / Technical

  • Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS): AMOS, ShipManager, Idea
  • Voyage reporting and performance monitoring platforms
  • Remote diagnostics and sensor data interpretation
  • Basic data visualization (Excel, Power BI for KPI dashboards)

Crewing Management

  • Crew management software (COMPAS, OneTouch, Seagull Maritime)
  • Certificate tracking and compliance systems
  • Video interviewing platforms
  • Digital psychometric assessment tools

HSQE / Compliance

  • Vessel inspection reporting systems
  • IMO DCS and EU MRV data management
  • Incident management and near-miss reporting platforms

Commercial / Chartering / Operations

  • Voyage estimation tools
  • AIS tracking platforms (Kpler, MarineTraffic, Windward)
  • Freight market data platforms (Baltic Exchange, Clarksons)
  • Document management and charter party software

Port Operations

  • Terminal Operating Systems (TOS)
  • Gate automation and truck booking systems
  • Cargo tracking platforms

Emerging Digital Skills (Build Them Now)

  • Data analysis: SQL basics, Excel/Power BI, Python fundamentals
  • Cybersecurity awareness: IMO 2021 cyber risk requirements apply to all vessels
  • AI tools: Prompt engineering, AI-assisted document analysis, predictive maintenance AI
  • Digital communication and remote collaboration tools: Teams, Slack, asynchronous working

How to Build Digital Skills as a Maritime Professional

  • Online courses: Coursera, LinkedIn Learning (search maritime-adjacent technology topics), Class NK digital training modules
  • Vendor training: Many PMS and fleet software providers offer certification programs
  • On-the-job learning: Ask to join digital transformation projects within your company — volunteering for these gives exposure and visibility
  • Industry events: Nor-Shipping, Europort, and SMM all have strong digital and innovation tracks

Pro Tip: You don't need to learn everything. Identify the two or three digital tools most central to your specific maritime function and become genuinely proficient in them. Depth beats breadth when employers assess digital capability.
