Certificate of Competency exams have a reputation that precedes them, usually badly. Most of that reputation comes from candidates who study the wrong way, not from the exam itself.

Cramming works for a quiz. It fails for oral exams, where an examiner is testing whether you actually understand a system, not whether you memorized a diagram the night before. Spaced repetition — reviewing key topics in short sessions over weeks, not hours — builds the kind of recall that survives an examiner's follow-up question.

Study groups outperform solo study for oral prep specifically, because explaining a concept to a peer exposes the gaps memorization hides. Find two or three others sitting the same exam window and take turns being the examiner.

Sea time and study time compete for the same hours — protect a fixed study block each week during your contract rather than hoping for spare time that rarely appears. And on exam day, remember examiners are usually trying to pass you, not fail you. They're listening for sound reasoning, not word-perfect recall.

Prepare like the exam is real. It is. But it's also passable, with the right method — and most candidates never learn that method until it's almost too late.
