Show Your Crew How Your Mind Works: The Trust Advantage Nobody Trains You For

Most officers are trained to project composure — steady voice, controlled expression, answers that sound certain even when they aren't. Research from Harvard Business School's Leslie John suggests that instinct may be quietly working against you.

John's work on self-disclosure finds that people habitually undershare, fixating on the risks of revealing too much while overlooking a simple truth: trust is contagious. When you show someone how you actually think — the doubt behind a decision, the reasoning behind a call — they trust you more, not less. On a multinational crew where hierarchy already limits how freely people speak up, that matters more than most safety posters admit.

This isn't about confessing weakness on the bridge. It's about narrating judgment: telling a junior officer why you chose a course, not just what course you chose. It's a chief engineer admitting a repair is unfamiliar territory before diving in, rather than performing certainty. John's research points to a distinction worth learning — transparency about process is different from vulnerability about performance, and the first builds far more credibility than officers assume.

The same applies ashore. A cadet who talks through their reasoning in an interview, rather than reciting a rehearsed answer, reads as more capable, not less prepared.

Recommendations:

• Narrate your reasoning out loud during a watch handover or task briefing, not just your conclusion.
• Match your level of openness to the person in front of you — reciprocity, not oversharing, builds trust.
• Before revealing something sensitive, get clear on your purpose first: what you want the disclosure to achieve.
• Practice sharing credit and small wins as openly as you'd share a concern — most people undershare good news too.
