The Fitness Routine That Fits in a Cabin, No Gym Required

Functional strength — not bulk — is what actually protects seafarers from injury at sea.

Nobody puts "climb four flights of engine room ladders in 40°C" on a job description, but that's the job. Most seafarers train for the medical exam. Almost none train for the physical reality of the work itself.

Shipboard fitness doesn't need a gym most vessels don't have. Bodyweight circuits — squats, push-ups, planks — done in 20-minute blocks between watches build the functional strength that actually matters: gripping a mooring line, carrying stores, staying steady in a seaway. Resistance bands pack flat and travel light, and a skipping rope fits in any cabin.

Posture matters more than most seafarers realize. Hours at a chart table or engine console take a toll identical to any desk job — add five minutes of stretching to every watch handover and your back will thank you at 45.

Injury prevention beats injury recovery every time, and recovery at sea is harder than ashore — no physio on call, no easy rest day. Treat your body like the equipment it is: the one piece of gear you can't requisition a replacement for.
