Methanol, ammonia and LNG are all competing for the bunker of the future. Fuel-flexible officers win either way.
The fuel tank of the future isn't settled, and that uncertainty is exactly why it matters now. Methanol, ammonia, LNG, and green hydrogen are all racing for a share of the post-2030 bunker market — and each comes with its own handling risks, training needs, and onboard systems.
Ammonia is toxic and needs entirely new safety protocols. Methanol burns with a nearly invisible flame. LNG is mature but not carbon-neutral. No single winner has emerged, which means the safest career bet isn't picking a fuel — it's building fluency across all of them.
Shipowners are already retrofitting and newbuilding dual-fuel vessels, and STCW-aligned fuel-specific training is becoming a genuine differentiator on a CV. Officers who complete IGF Code and methanol/ammonia familiarization courses early are positioning themselves for the fleets being built right now, not the ones retiring.
This is a rare moment in maritime history: the fuel transition is still being written, and the seafarers who learn fastest will help write the safety playbook others follow.
