New Harvard research shows advanced technical skills are built on a foundation nobody can automate.
It's tempting to assume that as ships get smarter, the people running them need to get more technical, faster. Research from Harvard Business School's Letian Zhang, analyzing 70 million job transitions across 20 million resumes, suggests the opposite priority might matter more.
Zhang's research shows that professional skills build in "nested" layers: foundational abilities — communication, critical thinking, reading comprehension, teamwork — form the base that specialized technical skills grow out of. Up to 80% of the wage premium tied to advanced technical expertise depends on those foundational skills already being solid. Without them, technical training doesn't compound the way it should.
For an industry racing to adopt AI navigation systems, predictive maintenance platforms, and digital fleet management, that finding lands directly on deck. An officer who can operate a system but can't clearly communicate an anomaly to a superintendent, or a crew member who can read a dashboard but can't collaborate under pressure when it flags something real, has only half the skill the role actually needs.
Zhang's research also flags a real risk: unequal access to foundational skill development early in life creates "skill entrapment" that specialized technical training alone can't fix later. For an industry actively trying to widen its talent pool, that's a reason to invest in communication and teamwork training as seriously as technical certification, not instead of it.

The strongest maritime careers ahead won't belong to whoever adopts the newest tool first. They'll belong to whoever can think, communicate, and collaborate well enough to use it properly.
