New research from Harvard identifies the leadership roles behind lasting innovation — and shipping needs all three.
Maritime companies don't struggle to find new technology to adopt — autonomous navigation, alternative fuels, digital twins, predictive maintenance are all available today. What most struggle with is turning a single successful pilot into change that sticks across an entire fleet or organization. New research from Harvard Business School's Linda Hill, Emily Tedards, and Jason Wild, drawn from their book Genius at Scale, identifies why: innovation at scale depends on three distinct leadership roles working together, and most companies only have one.
Architects build the internal foundation — reshaping culture, removing barriers to collaboration, and creating the psychological safety for crews and shore teams to experiment without fear of blame when something doesn't work. Bridgers operate at the edges of the organization, building genuine partnerships with technology vendors, classification societies, and training providers, translating between different institutional cultures rather than just signing contracts. Catalysts think even wider — mapping the broader ecosystem of ports, regulators, and industry bodies, and seeding collaboration that benefits the whole sector, not just one company's competitive position.
Most maritime companies default to having strong Architects — internal champions pushing a new system — with nobody playing Bridger or Catalyst. The result is a great pilot program that never scales past the ship or department that ran it.
